Wire-recordings constitute a remarkable percentage of the audio records in the early years of founding of the Republic, most of which are degrading in quality and in short of playback devices, hindering the access to the precious records. A work group from the Institute of Scientific and Technological Research on Archives (ISTRA) conducted a project establishing a wire-recording restoration platform and digitizing wire-recordings from several archival agencies. This paper introduced established platform and its tryouts, including restoration strategy, methods, procedures and solutions for tackling special problems. Procedures involve assessment, pre-treatment, digital transformation, metadata capture, description, evaluation, etc. Issues such as machine repair, digital parameter setting, wire untangling, pace correcting, noise reducing and authenticity ensuring were also dealt with. Encouraging results were obtained for the restoration of nearly 100 reels of wire-recordings from half a dozen of local archives.
